On the bench

The space version of the folding bookend takes the same clever mechanism and points it at a different subject. Closed it does the quiet job of holding books upright; opened it becomes a lit scene with the depth that only a two sided build can give. At sixty-four and a half by forty by eighty-nine centimetres and around nine and a half pounds assembled, it has the presence of a real object rather than a toy on a shelf.

How it behaves in a build

The LED work is integral rather than added afterwards, which shows in how the light sits behind the structure instead of glaring out of it. Over three thousand pieces means a genuine build session, and the result is stable enough to handle daily. If you are choosing between the two bookends, pick by what you want to look at every morning; the engineering underneath is equally good in both.

Fit and compatibility

Assembled from standard brick geometry, so parts from an existing collection work as substitutes during the build.

More ASTEM technic parts: gears, axles and compatible building block sets

If this is part of a bigger build, the collection has the pieces around it. Across the technic shelves the geometry is constant — one technic gear module, one axle cross, one pin diameter — which is what makes a mixed building set LEGO® compatible in practice. When builders describe the experience of a pack — clean, tight, or fiddly — that customer note goes straight onto the bench.
