Sorting a bulk parts haul so you can find things

A big assortment is only an asset once you can put your hand on a 16 tooth gear without tipping a tub onto the floor. Function beats colour, and shallow beats deep.

Sort by what it does

Colour sorting looks wonderful and helps nobody. When you are building you think in jobs — I need a friction pin, I need a three long axle, I need a 24 tooth gear — so the drawers should answer those questions. Pins with pins, split into friction and free. Axles by length. Gears by tooth count. Beams by hole count. Connectors in one tray because you will recognise the one you want by shape.

Shallow drawers, not deep tubs

A deep tub means digging, and digging means a pile on the table that goes back in unsorted. Shallow drawers let you see the whole population of a part at a glance, which is also how you notice you are running low before a build stops. Cheap stackable organiser trays do the job; so do the lids of old boxes if you keep them in one place.

Leave the long tail mixed

There is always a residue: odd panels, single connectors, parts you cannot name. Do not build a drawer for each one. Keep a single miscellaneous tray, check it when nothing else fits, and promote a part to its own compartment only when you have reached for it three times.

Top up before you run dry

The point of a bulk pack is that it absorbs the loss rate. Models get dismantled on a carpet, pieces go under furniture, a class set thins out quietly over a term. Keeping a reserve of the dozen parts you use constantly — friction pins, bushes, two and three long axles, 16 and 24 tooth gears — is what lets you build on the evening you feel like building instead of the evening a parcel arrives.

Parts for this job

What sits next to this in the collection is worth a look before you check out. Our technic building set parts are cut to the standard module, so a technic gear, an axle or a pin out of this pack is compatible with the LEGO® system pieces you already own. We read every customer message, and the experience builders describe is what we change the tooling for.

Last word

An hour spent sorting buys back far more than an hour of searching, and it tends to inspire the next build as a side effect: you cannot see what you own without wanting to use it.
