Two objects in one build. Closed, it is a bookend with enough mass to hold a shelf of hardbacks in line. Opened, the two halves swing apart to reveal an interior scene, lit from within, which turns a functional object into something people stop and look at. Finished dimensions run sixty-four and a half by forty by eighty-nine centimetres and the completed model weighs a little under nine pounds, so this is furniture scale rather than desk scale.

How it behaves in a build

Three thousand pieces is a project rather than an evening, and the built in lighting is what makes the hours worthwhile — in a dim room the open scene reads completely differently from the daylight version. The structure holds together once assembled, which matters for a model that will be handled every time someone takes a book off the shelf. We would put this on a shelf at eye level rather than up high; the detail rewards a close look.
