A work caboose with a crane is not a revenue wagon; it is the railway looking after itself. Park it on a siding beside a stack of ties and a length of rail and that corner of the layout stops being scenery and starts being a story. Operationally it justifies a train that runs out, does something, and comes back, which is more interesting than hauling freight in a circle.

How it behaves in a build

The crane is the detail feature and it is moulded and painted to the same standard as the rest of the exterior work here. Metal components provide the weight for stable running, which a short work car needs as much as anything. Couplers are fitted at both ends so it can run mid train or on the tail. This is the car we would add once the basic roster is in place.
