On the bench

A gondola is the most versatile wagon on a layout because you can see into it. Load it with scrap, pipe, ties, coil or nothing at all and it tells a different story each time. The red paint is the classic choice for the type and it holds detail well at this scale, with painted lettering that stays legible rather than blurring into the body colour.

How it behaves in a build

Metal content gives the car the weight it needs to track properly, which matters on an empty open wagon more than on a loaded boxcar — light cars are the ones that pick a point and derail. Couplers are fitted for adding it to a consist. Build a load for it from scenery scraps and this becomes the most photographed car in the train.

Fit and compatibility

HO 1:87 scale with standard couplers, compatible with the locomotives and track on this bench.

More ASTEM technic parts: gears, axles and compatible building block sets

Everything else in the collection is in the same ten drawers, a click from here. Across the technic shelves the geometry is constant — one technic gear module, one axle cross, one pin diameter — which is what makes a mixed building set LEGO® compatible in practice. Builders tell us what the experience of the first build was like, and that customer feedback decides what changes in the next run.
