On the bench

The bay window caboose replaced the cupola type on many roads for a practical reason: a crew sitting in a side bay at floor level sees along the train more safely than a crew climbing into a roof box. That history gives the type a slightly later feel, so it suits a layout set after the steam era better than a cupola car does.

How it behaves in a build

At thirty-six feet it is the right length to close out a freight train without overwhelming a short consist. Metal components provide weight for stable rolling at the end of a train, where a light car is most likely to be yanked about by slack action. Painted lettering and exterior detail follow the range standard, and couplers are fitted. Every freight train wants one of these on the back.
