Covered hoppers are what moved the materials that must not get wet, and sand and gravel service is the most common version of that on a small layout, because almost every town has somewhere that takes aggregate. A covered car is also a good modelling choice for a beginner: nothing inside needs building, and the car looks correct whether it is loaded or empty.

How it behaves in a build

The thirty-six foot length is the older, shorter pattern that suits tighter curves and shorter sidings, which is useful if your layout fits on a door rather than in a room. Metal components provide weight and steady rolling, painted lettering identifies it, and couplers are fitted at both ends. A pair of these on an industrial spur gives a switcher something worth doing.
